Today, we are featuring Meir Sherer, a headmaster at a Jewish school in Boston. Ronit and Meir first met at her TLV studio two years ago and have had great chats whenever he visits. So, we thought we'd share one of those conversations with you here.

Ronit: I'd love to hear about your background. Where are you living these days, and what do you do?

Meir: I grew up in Albany, NY in a Jewish family very involved in our Jewish community. I have one sister and many cousins with whom I am close. Today, I live just outside of Boston with my husband. I've been living in Greater Boston since 1989.

Ronit: Could you share a bit about yourself? How did you come to be involved in your current profession, which seems quite fascinating?

Meir: I was very involved in Jewish life in my synagogue growing up, as well as the youth group. As I got closer to graduating high school, I knew that I wanted to be working in the Jewish community when I finished college. I also knew that I wanted a degree in Social Work. Upon graduation found a job working at a Jewish Community Center. Two years later I began graduate school for a Master's in Social Work. I worked at the JCC for 8 years. Along the way, my work led me more from community work to Jewish Education. And, in the early 2000's I earned my Master's in Jewish Education. I currently direct elementary and youth education in a synagogue.

Ronit: It sounds like your work is more than just a job—it’s a mission. Can you share what makes it so meaningful?

Meir: Yes, my work is definitely more than a job. It is a passion and a mission. It gives me purpose. I love being Jewish. I want everyone to feel the sense of joy I feel in being Jewish and to understand why it is we do what we do.

Ronit: When did your passion for collecting outfits and accessories first begin?

Meir: I would say in high school. Although, when I was little I would always be found walking around with some sort of glove. I would say that I tempered down what I wore until I came out as gay, which was after college. Little by little over the years I have come more and more into my own, wearing what I want to wear. It's been interesting to me that at the same time I have come to find more and more options. Men's clothing is not as conservative as it was once.

Ronit: How do you acquire your outfits? Do you have them specially made, or do you find pieces here and there to craft your looks?

Meir: Both! I had a shirt made for me by a designer I found in Provincetown, Massachusetts in the mid-nineties. I have a few pieces that were made for me in Israel. There was a designer on Dizengoff back in 2004-2008 named Lot. I still have it! Over the years, I always found a piece or two here and there. During Covid I started looking for pieces that would give me a look similar to the character of David Rose on the show Schitt's Creek. One designer led me to another. I have found a number of designers on FaceBook. And, of course, because of the algorithms, many designers now find me.

Ronit: And finally, how did you discover Ronit Fürst Eyewear and what drew you to it?

Meir: About fifteen years ago I was working in Worcester, Massachusetts and a woman there was wearing a pair of your frames. Then in 2018 when I was in Jerusalem, I stumbled upon your store on Jaffa Road. I fell in love with a pair I found and purchased them. In 2022 I went back to this store to look for another pair. The selection was somewhat limited. I knew I would be in Tel Aviv and thought I would look for a pair at a store there thinking in Tel Aviv there would be a wider selection. This is when I found your studio and YOU!
