Black Magic

In 2017, during a visit to London, I had the opportunity of delving into the Royal Academy of Arts, where an exhibition of the Pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse was hosted.

As I was sauntering through the room admiring the art, one painting in particular drew my attention. I made my way to observe it from up-close, and was immediately enchanted. The painting’s name was “The Magic Circle”, and it portrayed a sole sorceress mid-spell, surrounded by nature and energy. The mystique aura, dark colors and mythical symbolism sparked my inspiration.

After leaving the exhibition, I thought about the positive representation of the powerful woman with spiritual abilities, and how it stood in complete contrast to the heinous witch hunts of the 13th through 18th centuries and the misogynistic stereotypes that fueled them. I wanted to preserve that positive image, and to make it a core motive in this collection.

The designs in the “Black Magic” collection, much like the style of the Pre-Raphaelites, are abundant in detail and feature intense colours. The color palette is influenced by “The Magic Circle”, and consists of dark pastels with a matte finish.
